Roles and Directions of Thai Enterprise Development Division, The Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI), and Supporting Industry Sector

14 Years ... long collaborative relationship 7 strong partnership for Thai industry to globally competition
Mr. Punlop Punyasiri
Director, Thai Enterprise Development Division Thailand Board of Investment (BOI)

Mr. Punlop Punyasiri, Director of Thai Enterprise Development Division, explained about the background of the Thai Enterprise Development Division as follows. “Due to BOI’s organizational restructuring, 2 divisions – the BOI Unit for Industrial Linkage Development (or previously known as BUILD) and the Thai Overseas Investment Promotion Division were combined to integrate their functions and renamed to the “Thai Enterprise Development Division.” The new division focuses on developing and supporting Thai enterprises. Particularly, industrial linkage is promoted between Thai entrepreneurs and large companies, both Thai and foreign ones, for purchasing parts domestically instead of importing. As for Thai overseas investment promotion, potential Thai enterprises are supported to invest overseas, such as in CLMV countries and emerging countries including South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. In addition, our division puts emphasis on developing subcontracting industries and entrepreneurs’ supply chains in strong existing industries with high potential, such as automobiles and electronics. We also aim to support target industries, such as rail, digital, medical equipment, and modern vehicles, etc. The division’s goal is to raise the competitiveness of Thai supporting industries for competing in the global market.”

Mr. Punlop further mentioned about the important roles of the Thai Enterprise Development Division that, “Approximately 1,500 projects, including those from large companies, filed for investment promotion in 2020 and provided a great opportunity for Thai enterprises. For example, ‘Great Wall Motor’, a large Chinese automotive manufacturer, and Mitsubishi Motors have been approved to set up electric vehicles (EV) manufacturing factories. Major electric and electronics manufacturers are also reallocating their productions to Thailand. There has been an exponential growth in the digital industry after the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak. Hence, Thai enterprises, especially those in Tier 2 or Tier 3 should adjust and develop their businesses for the supply chain of these industries.”

“Target Buyer Groups BOI invited for Subcon Thailand 2021”

“Subcon Thailand 2021 is our big annual event. It serves as an important channel to exhibit the potential of Thai supporting industries and a center for purchasing industrial parts in the ASEAN region. The main target industries of the event are the strong existing supporting industries in Thailand, such as automotive buyers, electronics, electrical appliances, machinery and metal, plastics, etc. Meanwhile, the target groups expand to other industries with high potential and competitiveness in Thailand, such as rail, medical, modern automotive, digital, automation, agricultural and agricultural processing industries, etc.”

Mr. Punlop concluded with high hope that “In Subcon Thailand 2021, we expect to see at least 1,300 pairs of business matching and linkage worth more than 5,000 million baht.”

The association provides assistance and potential development and business linkage promotion for Thai enterprises in the industrial sector during the outbreak of COVID-19

Mr. Kiattisak Jirakajonvong
President, Thai Subsontracting Promotion Association

Mr. Kiattisak Jirakajonvong, President of the Thai Subcontracting Promotion Association, mentioned about the association’s roles and responsibilities that “More than 90% of the 400 member companies in the Thai Subcontracting Promotion Association or briefly referred to as Thai Subcon are manufacturers in the automotive industry. During the COVID-19 outbreak, the members have been greatly impacted. Some companies received zero income but had to bare expenditures to keep their business. The association acts as a mediator among the members and different public and private agencies. We work hard to assist our members in reaching out to new industries with assistance from chairmen of the five industrial clusters, including 1) rail industrial cluster 2) medical devices industrial cluster 3) aviation and logistics industrial cluster 4) defense industrial cluster and 5) automation industrial cluster. The association has approached various related agencies in the 5 Thai industrial clusters to transfer technology, jointly create jobs, and reduce imports. For example, during the COVID-19 outbreak, the auto parts manufacturers have started to produce medical devices, such as PAPRs that purify air from the COVID-19 virus for healthcare personnel, or some medical disposable consumables that previously must be imported, etc.”

What are the highlights of the association’s exhibition in SUBCON THAILAND this year?

Thai Subcon Association plans to exhibit the production potential of Thai enterprises to relevant agencies, both in public and private sectors. Such potential includes the workmanship and product quality in the 5 industrial clusters mentioned above, including 1) rail industrial cluster 2) medical devices industrial cluster 3) aviation and logistics industrial cluster 4) defense industrial cluster and 5) automation industrial cluster. The Thai people’s world-class capabilities and competitiveness will be on display. Participants of the Subcon Thailand 2021 will see samples of work pieces and production technology by Thai people in the 5 S-Curve industries. If you are interested in being a part of the clusters with the Thai Subcon Association, please come and join us at Subcon Thailand 2021, which will be held on May 13-15, 2021, at BITEC.
