Additive Manufacturing: 3D Printing technology, is the driving force to revolutionize IIoT Industry

Addictive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is the driving force to revolutionize IIoT industry. AM is a approach to industrial production that adds materials of choice to create an object in a cost-effective manner with scalabiltiy and, therefore, yields a higher return on investment. Orchestrated with digital connectivities and platforms, AM is the transformative game-changer that enables a smart factory.

In this special year-end issue, MEGA Tech would like to share with you our rewarding interview with four 3D printing veteran executives. Mr. Akarin Hemyoo Managing Director of Cerathai, Mr. Vorawat Vadhanakovint, Managing Director of Septillion, Ms. Asama Anunta-umporn, Director of Palawatr and Mr. Panitan Kobkulsuwan, Director of Thaisakol Group.

Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing Technology) The role of the major Industrial IoT revolution

3D Printing helps the production of customized or group-specific parts in small or medium quantities. It allows an easier and quicker production at a cheaper cost compared to creating a mold or preparing tools such as jig & fixture or mass customization. 3D Printing also allows frequent product development efforts to individualize products. The parts can be stored in a digital format, not a hardware one, enabling a production of spare part on demand in a short period of time. A variety of materials can be chosen for the forming process, such as titanium, polymer which is carbon fiber equivalent to steel but has super light weight, or polymer with high temperature resistance or flame retardant properties. The forming process does not cause material waste because it adds layers to the workpiece, not cutting. The work can be reduced while maintaining strength by using a honeycomb infill pattern. Some of 3D Printing parts require less assembly by designing a combination of components such as pipe joints.

“Multi Jet Fusion” technology for polymer powder molding bonds the powder materials with deep sensitizer spraying innovation to create the 3D shape designed by the computer when exposed to infrared heat of nano voxel resolution (nano voxel = volume + pixel). Accordingly, the polymer powder will be formed into the designer’s desired shape at a very detailed and compact level. In the near future in addition to polymer powder, HP is applying this technology in combination with metal powder and other metal powders namely “Metal Jet” to mold the metal powder and meet the demand of each industry as follows. Automotive, aerospace, ship, and rail industries can manufacture general and complex parts quicker, in greater quantity than traditional manufacturing, with lower price per piece if the quantity is right, and with just-in-time method. In addition, obsolete parts can also be re-manufactured with no need of stock , Industry that uses robot to manufacture tools for its own use such as gripper/finger/adaptor , Medical device manufacturing industry such as manufacture of invisalign for individual patient, manufacture of shoe soles for individual patient, and fitted prosthetic legs.

3D Printing or Additive Manufacturing is one of the Industry 4.0 innovations that can be applied in the manufacturing industry. Surely, for entrepreneurs to switch to new production technologies, they must be proven to help increase competitiveness, reduce production costs, or increase production speed. Nowadays, 3D printing can answer those basic questions without a doubt. However, what is more special than other technologies is that 3D Printing allows you to think outside the box, helps generate new ideas, and sparks change. Designing new products that cannot be produced with the current production process or meeting a wider variety of consumers’ needs (Mass Customization) are now possible. These gaps in the market are being filled with products created by 3D Printing. This important turning point will allow entrepreneurs to transform from original equipment manufacturers (OEM) to owners of their brand.

Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing Technology)The role of the major Industrial IoT revolution

3D printing technology’s strength lies in its ability to “produce parts of any shape, anytime, anywhere as needed”. Most industries have substantially long and complex supply chains. Manufacturing companies must outsource parts production from suppliers, who may have their manufacturing facilities overseas. Obtaining desired parts requires a lot of steps, including supplier selection, production order approval request, and parts transportation across the continents. As global manufacturers are facing factory shutdown problems during the COVID-19 pandemic, they are unable to supply products to customers, causing supply shock or product shortage, ranging from PPE protection devices to semiconductor chips. Therefore, maintaining production to keep up with the current market demand is highly challenging. A 3D printer serves as a mini portable factory. It can be set up and immediately produce parts anywhere with almost no labor. Therefore, manufacturers who are open to new technologies such as 3D printing can gain an advantage over competitors who rely on traditional production methods, as they can respond quickly and efficiently to their customers’ needs at reduced production costs, less amount of waste, and significantly fewer labors.
