The things to consider when drilling a deep hole are that small particles are often compressed in the hole and the strength of the drill used for drilling. In particular, there are many different types of raw materials that differ in surface and thickness that impact the drilling work. Thus, drill selection is very important to get the quality and efficient performance as required.

Drill developed by Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal Coporation, Japan, including SumiDril WDX Type and SEC-Multi Drill SMD Series, the model MTL, MEL, and MB, have suitable functions that suit the specific type of surface for deep hole drilling.

SumiDrill WDX Type

SumiDrill WDX with its excellent balanced design, achieves stable drilling for a variety of work materials from general steel, stainless steel to cast iron.

In addition, there are 3 types of original chipbreaker designs available that enhance chip control and lower cutting forces, applicable to low rigidity setup conditions.

1. Provides stable and high quality drilling with balanced design

2. 3 types of chipbreakers to eliminate chip control problems

3. New coating technology achieves long tool life with improved fracture and wear resistance

4. Economical 4-cornered insert interchangeable between the center and peripheral edges

Highly durable body with a special hardened surface treatment enables stable and long usage for not only normal drilling but also a variety of machining such as hole expansion, counter boring, etc.

3 types of chipbreakers cater to a wide variety of work materials and applications

“Chip Control Grooves” located at the center of the chipbreakers effectively control the direction of chip flow on 3 types of chipbreakers that reduce chip control problems and cover a wide variety of work materials and conditions L type: for low feed and chip control, G type: General-purpose, H type: Strong edge.

Replaceable type drill with exchangeable heads using a unique radial serration design, for high precision and strength. Exchangeable drill heads provide new cutting edges, higher productivity and cost efficiency with easy tool management. Regrinding allowance of 1.5mm to 3.0mm makes further tool cost reductions possible.

1. MTL model

Optimized design for high efficiency drilling of general steel

1. Strong peripheral cutting edge

2. Large edge treatment

Drilling Super-Straight Holes

Optimized design for high ductile materials used for large casing

1. Specialized edge treatment designed to handle low machine and clamp rigidity situations

2. Utilizing a high toughness substrate which prevents unexpected breakages when working with expensive materials

3. Large thinning angle designed to reduce thrust in heavy cutting

* Strong helix angle design improves chip control when drilling high ductile materials

2 MEL model, which is an optimized design for hard-to-cut materials such as stainless steel, mild steel, gray cast iron, low rigidity setups. It is an excellent cutting edge design for SUS and mild steel, etc. (SS material, etc.). It consists of a large thinning angle that prevents breakage at the convex R-profile portion, particularly when drilling mild steel. It also reduces breakage caused by adhesion when drilling stainless steel, including the improved edge chipping at the hole exit on cast iron. With better edge sharpness at the peripheral edge, it can prevent chipping at the hole exit when drilling cast iron.

1. Sharp peripheral cutting edge

2. Small edge treatment

3. MB model, Optimized design for drilling rolled steel for welded structures (single or stacked plates)

1. New J-flute design that is wide and smooth to significantly improve chip control and evacuation.

2. Excellent fracture resistance and excellent chip control with a cutting edge designed exclusively for drilling structural steel.

3. High toughness substrate and reinforced edge treatment reduces peripheral edge chipping caused by sudden work shift.

4. Centrally located oil holes which directs coolant at the cutting edge even during MQL drilling.
