Over the next five years, we are about to witness the world we live in entirely disrupted by improvements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Children today are growing up with AI assistants in their homes (Google Assistant, Siri and Alexa) — to the point that you might consider their mere presence an extension of co-parenting. However, there is no denying that it is only a matter of time before AI starts to make a big difference in multiple industries and in a number of areas.

The AI trend will continue to spawn startups dedicated to, which could lead to a cure for cancer and other diseases.

The healthcare industry stands to benefit the most from advancements in AI. The ability to continually analyze different types of diseases and potential treatments could eventually lead to a cure for cancer. From new drug discoveries to creating artificial limbs that learn from the body’s own nervous system and react accordingly, AI-based healthcare technology contains the power to help people live longer and healthier lives.

Machine learning algorithms will become the new software.

In the past, startups were scrambling to create solutions that could gather large amounts of information through the use of complicated algorithms utilizing artificial intelligence. Now it’s all about selling those algorithms. Enterprise companies will pay big bucks to be able to target their customers as precisely as they can, with customized offers and retargeting ads.

The Internet of Things will become more about the data collected by those things than the things themselves.

Technology advancement  has been on the rise for almost a decade. The next wave is in the data all those “things” in the collect. Solutions that utilize AI to analyze the increasingly large amount of information will continue to do well in 2018, especially in the areas of healthcare, finance, and security.

AI will have an even greater impact on education technology.

Will robots replace teachers one day? Probably not completely, but artificial intelligence is certainly playing an . From adaptive learning programs that cater to special needs children to online learning schools that automatically adapt to a student’s native language anywhere in the world, advancements in education technology powered by AI are helping to shrink the knowledge gap.

Automation, automation, automation.

We all know about Tesla and Elon Musk’s claims about the capability of its autopilot feature. We hear that the company is very close to being able to navigate autonomously from coast to coast in the United States. We have witnessed autopilot firsthand and, on a motorway, it was very impressive. However, that was a motorway with fairly straight lanes and nice, clear road markings. Navigating through the center of London or, even harder, on a single-track country lane with hedges on either side, is an entirely different proposition. We are a very long way from AI that is powerful and experienced enough to safely navigate a very complex journey on its own.

Car manufacturers are now looking at embedding AI services such as Amazon Alexa into their vehicles to allow passengers to control technology in the car through natural language voice commands.

At this year’s CES show in Las Vegas, Mercedes-Benz demonstrated its new AI-powered in-car personal assistant, and in 2017, BMW announced it would start integrating Alexa into selected BMW and Mini vehicles in 2018. Kia also recently announced it will soon embed Google Assistant into its infotainment systems.

Undoubtedly, we will see increasingly powerful AI within new cars over the next few years, used for both navigation and as in-car virtual assistants. But it will be many years (even decades) before we have cars that use AI to be truly autonomous.

In conclusion, artificial intelligence will play an important role in pretty much all aspects of technology in the coming year and for many years to come. It’s a pretty exciting time to be an  or  when you consider the fact that your AI-enhanced solution may one day cure cancer or bring about world peace.
