The task of the chip breaker is to cut the material and to crack the formed chips into the largest acceptable size. Every chip breaker is designed for a special material group and for a application area.
Especially in turning the application area is definded by a low and high level of feed and depth of cut. The international ISO-standard defines 4 application areas:
